So you think being a witch is fun, right? Would love to have my life? Me, Sydlynn Hayle, sixteen-year-old All-American girl, or at least trying to be. I do my best to fit in, you know? But when you have power, normals can feel it. Like they sense something’s wrong with me or different. Like stupid paranormal snap crackling static cling.
Which naturally means every time my coven is forced to move, it’s a new town, but the same old thing. Syd the outcast, Syd the weird girl.
Syd the lonely.
My mom wishes I’d just chill out and accept my fate. Embrace the magic that makes me want to throw up every time I use it, bury myself in the ‘family’ of our coven. Of course, she happens to be the leader of said coven, so it’s only natural she’d want me to fall in line, I guess. Still. I wish she’d adjust her tactics. I’m a little tired of the Mom waterworks every time we talk about it. That woman is a freaking supernatural faucet.
That is when we’re not yelling at each other and slamming doors. Think you know what I mean? Had some doozies of your own? Yeah, not. When witches slam doors, the earth moves.
It doesn’t help that my dad lives on the demon plane, either, and I don’t get to see him much. He’s a demon lord and has responsibilities, I get that, I really do. But it seems like every time he does show up he takes Mom’s side. He’s all about me and my demon half getting along and playing nice. He has no idea.
All I want, all I’ve ever wanted, is to be normal, ordinary and just like everyone else. I know I probably sound like a whiner to you. But you don’t live my life. You don’t have your world invaded by every single person in the ‘family’ needing to know your business. Or the constant nagging of a demon cat who thinks it’s his right to tell you what you’re doing wrong every chance he gets.
How about the constant threat of impending doom looming over you, aware that you may have to move in the middle of the night to a new state so no one gets arrested or turned into something unnatural? Yeah, didn’t think so.
And now, wouldn’t you know it, something weird is happening to the coven, magic weird. Already, and we’ve just moved to Wilding Springs. It doesn’t help that the local cheer squad has decided, to their leader Alison’s delight, to make my life a living misery. Or that some old friends of Mom’s have shown up, with their darkly delicious son in tow.
Who knows. Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe things will work out this time.
Anyone taking bets?
